MARINES:  Learn while still on active duty!  The United Association offers great wages, cutting-edge training and benefits including medical, dental and pension for those who join our ranks.  Successfully complete and certify in this fully funded welding training program and you will be offered an apprenticeship in the piping industry.  The program leads to employment as a second year apprentice with future wages of $50 per hour (with benefits) upon successful completion of your apprenticeship.

The United Association of Journeymen and Apprentices of the Plumbing and Pipefitting Industry (UA), in coordination with Marine Corps Base Camp Pendleton, is offering a special opportunity for training and employment of 16 Marines in a formal course of welding instruction for 16 weeks.  Successful completion of the program will lead to direct entry into an apprenticeship program with up to one year of credit towards our 5 year program.  This is a unique pilot program because participants will not be required to have previous welding or pipefitting experience.

The training program will be offered through Plumbers & Steamfitters District Council 16 and Local Union 230 in San Diego, California.  Local 230 is affiliated with the United Association of Journeymen and Apprentices of the Plumbing and Pipefitting Industry of the United States and Canada and the Mechanical Contractors Association of California.  The Joint Apprenticeship and Training Committee has been registered with the California State Department of Labor & Industries since 1959.

Plumbers/Steamfitters are skilled, trained craftsworkers who install, maintain and service all plumbing, process piping, vacuum, oxygen, natural gas, hydraulic heating, refrigeration, air conditioning and cooling systems, as well as the industrial instrumentation and the sophisticated automatic control systems that control these processes.

We preserve the public health and safety by protecting drinking water from contamination, assuring properly installed natural and medical gas systems, confirming the proper operation of each of these systems and the equipment which are components of these systems.

The Plumber/Steamfitter must read and interpret building drawings and specifications, make calculations, fabricate and install systems under the direction of a mechanical engineer and according to state building codes.

You're a VIP so join the United Association and become part of our family!

Apprenticeship Training

To join the UA without prior experience, individuals enter a United Association five-year apprenticeship program and are part of a select group of men and women motivated to learn a complex and challenging trade while upholding the ideals of trade unionism.  However, as state above, successful completion of the UA VIP Accelerated Welding Program will provide you with direct entry into the apprenticeship program with up to one year of credit being given towards your apprenticeship.

UA Apprentices learn through both classroom and on-the-job training in what is considered by many to be the best construction industry apprenticeship program in the world.  The apprenticeship program is five years of intensive technical training, consisting of 10,000 hours of on-the-job training and approximately 1,200 hours of related training in the classroom.
